Support Groups, Classes, Workshops and Events

If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center offers a variety of support groups to help you and your family. Led by trained professionals, these groups offer emotional support, education, an opportunity to learn ways of coping with uncertainty and change, and a chance to meet others who face similar issues. All programs will be held in the Patient and Family Services conference room, First Floor, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine unless otherwise noted.

All Cancer Support Group. This group is for patients and families coping with any kind of cancer at any point in the cancer journey. Group will be held the first Tuesday of each month from 3-4 p.m. beginning January 2015.  Please call for more information 215-615-0534.

Amyloidosis Support Group. This group is for patients and families coping with amyloidosis. This group is held twice per year.  The next group is November 7, 2015.   To register, please visit www.amyloidosissupport.com or call Peg Rummel at 215-614-0651.

Brain Tumor Support Group. This group will be held on the second Wednesday of the month except August from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Silverstein Conference Room, 3rd, floor.  To register, call 215-615-5240.

Breast Cancer Support Group. This group provides an opportunity to network with other women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This group offers education and peer support to enhance coping with your breast cancer diagnosis. This group meets the second Tuesday of the month from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m., in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, 1st Floor West Pavilion, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Caring for the Caregiver. A group for caregivers and loved ones of those with cancer will be held on the third Tuesday of the month from 12-2 p.m. The group is co-sponsored by the Association of Oncology Social Work.  For more information please call 215-614-0651.

Chemotherapy Treatment Orientation.  This class prepares patients with gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, melanoma or brain tumors and their caregivers for chemotherapy treatment, and reviews supportive services available both at Abramson Cancer Center and in the community. Here, you will meet important members of your team including those from nursing, social work, nurse navigation, nutrition and others. This is a time for you and your caregiver to ask questions and gain a better understanding of what to expect during treatment and the services available to support you along the way.

Classes are held the second Friday of each month 9-11 a.m. and the last Wednesday of the month 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. To register, please call 215-614-1863.

Esophagectomy Support Group (Ravdin 6). HUP proudly supports patients who have undergone an esophagectomy. The group was created by the nurses of the thoracic surgery department with the mission to be a source of information and support for patients and their families as they navigate the recovery process. This group will meet in the main hospital. Call 215-662-3878 for registration.

Hematology Oncology Support Group. This group is for patients, families, and friends of patients living with a hematology (blood cancer) diagnosis. The purpose of this group is to have a safe space to discuss emotional concerns, challenges, triumphs, resources, and coping. The group will meet on the second Thursday of the month from 2-3 p.m. Pre-registration for this free program is required. Please call 215-614-0651.

Head and Neck Cancer Support Group. This group will be held on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:45-11:15 a.m. To register, call 215-662-6123 or email: tracy.lautenbach@uphs.upenn.edu.

Lung Cancer Support Group. The lung cancer support group provides a safe space for patients, families and friends of patients living with a lung cancer diagnosis.  We welcome all participants.  The group is scheduled to meet the third Wednesday of each month from 10-11 a.m.  For further information and to RSVP, please call Joyce Mitchell 215-615-0536.

Prostate Cancer Support Group will be held on the third Thursday of each month from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., except August. To register, please call 215-349-8183.

Young Adult Cancer Support Group:  A group for individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer ages 18-40.  Group will meet the first Wednesday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 1800 South Street (Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse-“Graduate Hospital”).  RSVP required, please call 215-614-0651.

Women’s Cancer Support Group for women facing cancer and their families will be held on the second Tuesday of the month from 12:00-1:30 pm. For more information please call 215-614-0651. 

Look Good…Feel Better. An American Cancer Society sponsored workshop teaching women in active cancer treatment beauty techniques to combat appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy will be held on the following Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.:
