Brain tumors are those that are formed by the abnormal growth of cells in the brain or have spread to the brain from other parts of the body (metastasis). Brain tumors may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). At the Abramson Cancer Center, we specialize in treating malignant tumors of the brain.
It is important to diagnose brain tumors as soon as possible. As they grow, they can cause swelling in the brain, severe headaches, blurred vision, and seizures. Symptoms vary according to the location of the tumor. If you have any of these symptoms, especially if they don’t go away or get worse over time, see your doctor immediately.
Brain tumors may be caused by genetic disorders or diseases such as the Von Hippel-Lindau disease. However, in many cases, there is no known cause or risk factor for brain tumors.
